Every hotel needs a hotel improvement plan
Research from Booking.com and more recent study from ABN AMRO has shown that the hospitality industry has shifted it’s focus on becoming more sustainable.
78% of hotels see high energy prices as one of the biggest threaths to the operational margin
Although the energy prices have dropped significantly since this research took place (feb ‘23), it’s not expected that these prices will go back to levels of 2019-2021 anytime soon. This is one of the main drivers for hotels to become more sustainable, from a cost perspective angle.
56% made energy savings as their top priority for 2023.
Sustainability is more than just saving energy, but it’s a good starting point. There’s a lot of low-hanging fruit which is still untouched and most hotels can easily save anywhere between 15-25% without interfering in any way with the guest’s experience, or even being able to improve their expercience. .
So what’s the hold-up?
The research from ABN AMRO showed that there are multiple barriers which prevent hoteliers becoming more sustainable
Lack of time (21%). As it’s not the core business, it’s something which needs to be done on the side or which get’s postponed easily.
Lack of knowledge to see what potential there is for their hotel (25%). Specifically for smaller/independent hotels, it’s hard not to re-invent the wheel again and again.
Lack of references (12%). When it comes to implementing new solutions, references are a crucial part in the discissionmaking.
Lack of financial resources (42%). This has been seen as the biggest hurdle to become more sustainable. Who’s going to invest to become more sustainable?
Discussions between owner/tenant (21%). These can be though discusisons, where typically we see owners not willing to invest in upgrades of assets.
Does this sound familiar to you?
Operational efficiency, energy efficiency and sustainability in a broader perspective are items which are more easily postponed in busy times. If there isn’t any dedicated time available (and blocked) to identify and pursue opportunities, you won’t any results. But how are you able to identify the opportunities fit for your hotel and your organisation? How do you prevent that you’re re-inventing the wheel, or missing low-hanging fruit?
